Thanks for being here! The Kawai CA701 has arrived so it’s time for us to put it to the test to see exactly what’s improved from the highly regarded CA79 that it replaces.

Please like, subscribe and hit that notification bell!

Overview
The CA701 is the latest CA7* series model in a long line of very popular, high-end home digital pianos, and serves as the direct successor to the CA79.

It’s been a few months since Kawai’s announcement but we’ve finally got our hands on one, and the first thing that jumped out at us was the redesigned key cover. It just looks and feels a lot more substantial than past models.

Secondly, it was apparent right after we started playing it that the speaker performance is vastly improved. While the CA79 needed a bit of tweaking and EQing out of the box, the CN701 sounds exceptional without any tweaking with a full, balanced sound.

Piano Action
In terms of the piano action, the Grand Feel III action that was introduced with the CA79 and 99 is present here once again. This action features a triple sensor, let-off, counterweights, and most importantly, extended-length wooden keys bringing the pivot length closer to that of an acoustic grand piano.

Piano Sound
The CA701 is loaded up with the SKEX Rendering engine and the HIXL engine. The Rendering engine consists of 88-key multi-channel sampling, offered in a variety of configurations.

They’ve actually gone ahead and sampled a brand new SKEX for the CA701 and 901, and they’re referring it to their SKEX Competition Grand, meaning it was prepped for an actual competition.

The original SKEX sample is included, so you can compare them side-by-side. We’re noticing the new competition sample is emphasizing different partials, with a broader, more colorful sound.

Speakers
As we intimated above, the new speaker system is perhaps the single biggest improvement from the CA79. We’re working with a 6-speaker system here, with 4 top speakers and 2 downward-facing mains, all being driven by dual 55-watt speakers for a robust 110 watts of speaker power.

The speaker balance, EQ, and angling and baffling of the speakers have all improved. The tone is open and extremely detailed, yet without any harshness.

The 701 also has its own discrete headphone amp, so playing with headphones is a really wonderful 3D experience, though you need a pretty good set of headphones to truly take advantage of this.

Features/Connectivity
Kawai has improved the display by adding an anti-glare finish, and you can turn the backlight off if you wish.

All of the basics like a metronome, layer, split, transpose, onboard rhythms and four-hand mode are all included. There’s a ton of lesson book material and internal songs as well.

The 701 has Bluetooth MIDI and Audio, USB Type A and B and USB audio recorder, discrete ¼” line out, stereo mini line in and dual headphone jacks.
