The second movement of Dave Soldier's String Quartet #3, "The Essential" performed by the PubliQuartet. The term "fractal" was introduced by the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot for patterns that maintain the same shape at multiple scales, and so appear similar when viewed from a distance or close up. This pattern of this movement is entirely generated by the first 5 notes from Arnold Schoenberg's 2nd String Quartet: A, Bb, A, B, D. When the first A is played, the same five notes are played at four different speeds: at the beginning, the cello is slowest and the viola and two violins are each progressively faster. Each faster pattern is built on the slower ones, and so the next- faster five note pattern built on top of the Bb is transposed a half step to Bb, B, Bb, C, Eb. This stacking of patterns at four different speeds continues until the end of the piece, where the cycle is complete. While every pattern is exactly the same shape, the patterns that emerge from this process never repeat.
