Lyrics (English Translation)
I used to be a wildfire
I burned everything around me
But I can not perish
I have endured much anguish in this world
So many times I dreamt of leaving
But I couldn’t

How many deaths have I escaped?
How many deaths have I slain?
At the end I became a trouble
In the nooks of this foreign world
I fooled myself with this dream of a life
and became a trouble
In the nooks of this foreign world

I am a wild horse galloping
Half-heartedly, I run and run
My destination is not to be found
They say I don’t have a single home in this gigantic planet
Little do they know, on my saddle I carry my country

Director’s statement:
When I first heard “Yurtsuz” I was struck by the haunting vocals and melody. I am not a Turkish speaker, so before reading a translation of the lyrics I did not know what the song was actually about, but it sounded powerful. The song brought images of fire to mind – it has a mesmerizing quality. When I read the lyrics I was drawn to how relevant they are now – I thought of the many reasons why someone might leave their home and the trials that come with that decision. Though the lyrics are melancholy, they are also defiant, and I wanted to explore that sentiment in the video – the daring of someone who dreams of a better life.

A friend of Ozgu’s had been camping in yurt on a farm in Ontario, and she sent pictures to me asking what I thought of it as a location for the video. I loved the visual reference to a nomadic life, and when I visited The Buffalo Farm just north of Algonquin Park in Ontario I knew it was the perfect location for a video. The striking landscapes and the isolation lent themselves perfectly to the emotions in the song.

In this video a woman in a lonely motel dreams of a beautiful life of nomadic independence where she is totally free, the master of her world.
