Embedded electronic systems are a key component of modern mobility solutions such as the self-driving car or the autonomous air taxi. However, the safety-critical nature of these systems turns their design into a challenging endeavour.
Especially, the application of machine learning algorithms, the continuous interaction between vehicles and their environment and the need to run complex software on shared hardware platforms complicate the development process. A successful automation of this process ensure that vehicles operate safely and securely.
In the XANDAR project, eight partners from academia and industry collaborate to develop a toolchain delivering such an automation. The toolchain makes use of the X-by-Construction paradigm to ensure that relevant safety, security and timing requirements are met. It allows developers to specify these requirements via graphical and textual user interfaces. Afterwards, it uses a library of trusted building blocks to generate an embedded software system that is guaranteed to meet its requirements.
Despite the design challenges of modern autonomous vehicles, to achieve this the XANDAR library contains building blocks such as a hypervisor-based runtime environment, modern-based procedures for the automatic verification of timing properties and pre-verified patterns to implement safety or security mechanisms. For example, a safety pattern that duplicates a specific software component can be applied to achieve fault tolerance.
Thanks to the XANDAR toolchain, drivers can rest assured that brakes will be applied when the car approaches n obstacle, that attackers cannot access the video stream captured by an on-board camera and that the vehicle remains operational – even if critical components fail and functions need to be migrated to the fault-free part of the system.
