Napoleon captured Moscow. But why did he still lose the war?
He expected that the capture of the ancient capital would speed up the peace talks and that his soldiers would be able to winter here.
Kutuzov understood that it is possible to defeat the opponent only by keeping the army intact, and left the city.

Two-thirds of the city burned down.
People died and unique artworks were lost.
The French army was threatened by demoralization and famine – there were almost no supplies left.
Guerrilla and peasant groups controlled the area.
Wintering in a ruined city meant ruining the army.
The Russian emperor avoided negotiations. Napoleon realized that Moscow had become a trap for him.
