Phillips Forest Products

Family Owned and Operated Since 1958

We’re as proud of our history as we are of the wood products we create. Our story began many decades ago in Atoka, Oklahoma, where founder Cecil Phillips grew up in a family of seven children. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and working in sawmills in Germany, Cecil returned home to carry on the family’s sawmilling tradition. His father and uncle, Monroe Allen, had both worked in Oklahoma mills, and it was only natural that Cecil would follow the same path.

In 1953, Cecil and his wife Velma Jean moved their young family to Eureka, California, where he worked in the redwood forests. Just five years later, Monroe offered Cecil a loan to start a mill in Bowie County, Texas. The hardwood-rich land between the Red River and Sulphur River was ideal for timber, so Cecil relocated once more—this time to De Kalb, Texas—and began building a legacy.

The first mill, built in 1958, was a tie and timber operation. When a fire destroyed it, Cecil rebuilt using steel, establishing a mill that still stands today. Powered by a massive 50-inch circle saw—rare even then—the operation grew steadily. His son, Chuck Phillips, a Marine Corps veteran, joined the business, carrying the mill into a new era.

By the 1980s, changing industries and the decline of wooden bridge construction pushed Chuck to diversify. He introduced kiln-dried lumber for cabinets and furniture stock, setting the stage for a new reputation: high-grade, precision-crafted wood. In the 1990s, the company expanded again, adding moulding, flooring, and siding. With over 1,000 profiles available and the ability to design custom patterns, Phillips Forest Products became a trusted source for architects, designers, and builders alike.

The 2000s brought even greater growth. New kilns and storage facilities expanded production capacity, and the company rebranded as Phillips Forest Products, reflecting its evolution beyond a traditional sawmill. Chuck’s son, Cole Phillips, joined the business, overseeing operations and continuing the family’s dedication to craftsmanship and quality.

In 2010, the company embraced high design. Live edge slabs, countertops, butcher blocks, and custom furniture joined the product line. This vision led to the opening of The Forest Store in 2015, a retail space where customers could shop live edge furniture, mantels, cutting boards, and home goods.

Today, Phillips Forest Products is recognized as a Texas Historic Business—the oldest family-owned sawmill in the state. From rough-sawn beams and kiln-dried lumber to mouldings, flooring, butcher blocks, and furniture, our products are found in homes, businesses, churches, and public spaces across the United States and around the world.

Through decades of change, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to quality and to the people who make it possible. We are grateful for our employees, our customers, and the loggers who work tirelessly to supply the logs that keep our saws turning.

Phillips Forest Products is not just a mill. It is a legacy—built on hard work, resilience, and an enduring love for wood.

God Bless America.
