With its roaring jet engines and swept-back wings, it showed a new direction in fighter development and opened a new chapter in the history of air combat.Although the ME-262 was seen as the last resort of a desperate German army, and its production capacity fell far short of what was needed to turn the tide of the war, it proved to be a formidable aircraft in less than a year of combat.
第二次世界大戰進入尾聲之際，德國在各個戰線上節節敗退，已經走入窮途末路。因此想憑藉開發一些新式武器一舉迴天，從而誕生了許多人類的第一次，比如說人類歷史上第一款投入實戰的巡航導彈V-1，第一款投入實戰的彈道導彈V-2等等。
盟軍在戰爭後期爲了徹底摧毀德國的戰鬥力，派遣了大批戰略轟炸機滿載炸彈“問候”德國本土的軍工企業，比如爲其護航的P-51"野馬"，P-47"雷電"戰鬥機性能都相當出色，德軍憑藉Fw-190也只能勉強打出一比一的交換比，使得德國不得不加速了噴氣式戰鬥機的研製和服役步伐。人類航空史上第一種用於實戰的噴氣式戰鬥機梅塞施密特Me-262就此誕生。
它那呼嘯的噴氣式發動機和後掠式機翼顯示了戰鬥機發展的新方向，同時也揭開了空戰史上嶄新的一頁。雖然Me-262被視作深陷絕境的德軍所能施展的最後招數，而且其生產能力遠遠達不到扭轉戰局的需求，但不到一年的實戰過程卻證明它不愧爲一種強大的作戰飛機。
