The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was first chartered on July 4th, 1827, making it the first railroad to be established in the United States. Throughout its rich and colorful evolution, the B&O held on to some of its highlights and milestones, and decreed a home for them at the old Mount Claire roundhouse in Baltimore, MD since July 1953. Everything from recreations of the railroad's inception to the authentic artifacts of more recent times are all on show here.

For a time, some of that heritage was brought to life with short train rides on "America's First Mile" using St. Elizabeth's Hospital 0-4-0T #4. It was also an annual event with steam demonstrations by a 1927-built replica of 4-2-0 "Lafayette", and B&O 4-4-0 #25 "William Mason," then the oldest operating steam engine in the world. We also take you through a look at much of the B&O Railroad Museum's collection of locomotives, from some of the oldest of steam in the United States to brand new CSX diesel displays.
