Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India's 15th Vande Bharat express train on Wednesday. This train will run between Ajmer and Delhi Cantt. The first Vande Bharat Express train was flagged off on February 15, 2019 on the New Delhi Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi route. From a small run-way of 34 Kms. from Bori Bunder to Thane in 1853 to more than 68,000 route Kms. consisting of Broad gauge, Meter gauge and Narrow gauge, Indian Railways has undergone a huge transformation.

According to the National Rail Plan (NRP) for India – 2030 , the aim is to create a ‘future ready’ Railway system by 2030. The NRP is aimed to formulate strategies based on both operational capacities and commercial policy initiatives to increase modal share of the Railways in freight to 45%. As part of the National Rail Plan, Vision 2024 has been launched for accelerated implementation of certain critical projects by 2024 which include among others 100% electrification and multi-tracking of congested routes.

₹ 2.40 lakh crore was allocated for the Indian Railways in this year's budget which is 9 times of the outlay made in 2013-14. Railways is one of the key drivers of the PM GatiShakti scheme and the National Logistics Policy.
