PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It's a normal response to abnormal circumstances, where the brain's natural stress response system becomes stuck in a heightened state of alert. What causes PTSD:
Traumatic events like combat, accidents, natural disasters, assault, abuse, or witnessing violence. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD - it depends on various factors including the severity of the event, personal history, and available support systems.

PTSD is treatable through various approaches including trauma-focused psychotherapy (like EMDR or cognitive processing therapy), medications, and support groups. With proper treatment, most people can recover and regain control of their lives.

There's strong evidence that ancient Romans experienced what we would now recognize as PTSD, though they didn't have modern psychological terminology to describe it.

Roman writers documented symptoms that align closely with PTSD. They described soldiers suffering from persistent nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, and an inability to readjust to civilian life after combat. Terms like "irritable heart" were used to describe some of these psychological wounds.

Roman authors like Tacitus, Livy, and others wrote about the psychological toll of warfare. Veterans were described as being haunted by their experiences, suffering from what they called "invisible wounds" that were sometimes considered more debilitating than physical injuries.

The Romans understood that warfare could fundamentally change a person. They had concepts around the moral injury of war - the idea that certain acts in battle could damage one's soul or character permanently. Some veterans struggled with reintegration, turning to alcohol or becoming reclusive.

While they lacked modern therapy, Romans had various coping mechanisms including religious rituals, veteran communities, and sometimes early retirement from military service for those too psychologically damaged to continue.

Roman culture's emphasis on stoicism and honor sometimes made it difficult for soldiers to openly discuss psychological struggles, but the effects were still recognized and documented by observers of the time.
The universality of trauma responses to extreme violence suggests that PTSD-like conditions have likely affected warriors throughout human history, regardless of the era's understanding of mental health.
