The TMS5220 is a speech synthesis produced by Texas Instruments in the late 1970s and the 1980s. It was popularized as part of the Speech Synthesizer module for the TI-99/4A computer. In this video, I design and build a TMS5220 "multimodule" for my multibus computer. Multibus was popular back in the 70s and 80s as well, for both development computers and industrial controllers. A typical multibus computer had an 8080 or 8085, and newer ones even had x86 processors ranging from the 8086 up to the 80386. In this case I'm using an 80/24A single board computer which had an 8085. The multibus boards often had "multimodule sockets" for small peripheral board to be piggybacked on them, and this has been a perfect vehicle for implementing speech synthesizers -- I've done the SP0256A-AL2, the Votrax SC-01, the digitalker, and now I am adding a multimodule for the TMS5220. One of the nice features of the TMS5220 is that you can both use an external speech ROM, such as the TMS6100 as well as send speech data directly from the host computer. This allows you both an easy to use fixed vocabulary in ROM as well as an unlimited vocabulary from the host. I wrote a custom demo program to demonstrate both modes of operation.
