Aramark, a facility management company, terminated 33 employees at the Staples Center in Los Angeles after receiving a "no-match letter" from the Social Security Administration regarding 48 of its employees. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) filed a grievance claiming that the terminations were in breach of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Aramark and SEIU. An arbitrator ruled in favor of SEIU, awarding the fired workers back-pay and reinstatement. However, the district court vacated the award on the ground that it violated public policy.
