How Pure supports the tagging, showcasing and reporting of interdisciplinary research themes at the University of Manchester

In my talk, I will demonstrate how the University of Manchester’s cross-cutting research themes are showcased on the Research Explorer portal and how structured keyword tagging enables reporting on their activity. I will illustrate how Pure can enable the tagging of researchers and their content to the University’s Research Beacons, Platforms and Institutes.

In addition to displaying the organisational hierarchy, many institutions wish to showcase their cross-cutting research themes on the portal. Research themes may not form part of the official institutional hierarchy structure and so require manual set up and maintenance in Pure. Examples at different organisations can include research groups, centres, institutes, platforms, beacons, networks and domains. Ideally, a solution should allow researchers to self-affiliate their profiles and content to the cross-cutting research themes in addition to their organisational staff affiliation.

As part of the upgrade from our custom portal to the Pure portal last year, we developed a new approach to manage and showcase the University’s beacons, platforms and institutes and their content on the portal alongside the University’s hierarchy structure whilst allowing researchers to tag themselves, their work and research-related content in Pure.

I will explain the setup for institutes, platforms and beacons in Pure to enable managing their staff affiliations and content flexibly and to showcase their activity on the portal. I will show how we have made the change from our previous model of managing research institutes and their staff memberships using ‘manual’ organisational staff affiliations to the new model using the institute keyword tagging in Pure.
