STORYLINE:
Riot police were still holding ranks on Monday to prevent protesters from reaching the Peruvian Congress.

Demonstrators are demanding the representatives resign after a constitutional crisis that ended in a presidential transition when former president Pedro Castillo called to dissolve the Congress, which in turn ousted him.

Protesters across Peru are also demanding the president resign and schedule general elections to replace her and all representatives.

Police have repeatedly used tear gas to disperse the thousands of protesters that gather nearby, and some protesters have thrown rocks.

Protests have turned violent in previous days, especially in rural areas where Castillo had found most of his support.

Four people have died, including two young men.
