India has launched the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses — a major step toward achieving self-reliance in pulses production and reducing dependence on imports. Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2024–25 and launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this six-year mission (2025–26 to 2030–31) aims to boost pulses production by 45%, expand cultivation area by 13%, and improve yield by 28%.
Under this mission, the Ministry of Agriculture will focus on developing climate-resilient, high-protein seeds, enhancing productivity, strengthening post-harvest management, and ensuring remunerative prices for farmers. With an outlay of ₹11,440 crore, it also ensures 100% procurement of Tur (Arhar), Urad, and Masoor (Lentil) by NAFED and NCCF under the PM-AASHA Price Support Scheme.
India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses, yet it relies heavily on imports from Myanmar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Australia, and Canada due to lower yields. This mission addresses that gap by promoting pulses cultivation in both traditional and non-traditional areas — especially in rice fallow, rainfed, and aspirational districts.
