UTI in Children & Older Adults: Dr. Michael Hsieh on Chronic UTI, Part 4

Описание к видео UTI in Children & Older Adults: Dr. Michael Hsieh on Chronic UTI, Part 4

We mentioned in the last video that it is not uncommon for the immune system to sort out a mild or ”uncomplicated” UTI. However, it is not wise to assume the immune system doesn’t need help. This is because, if let alone too long, even an uncomplicated UTI infection can cause severe bladder inflammation and injury making the urinary tissues that much more vulnerable to further infections.

Antibiotics are undeniable life-savers here, both in regards to infection and inflammation, but it is true that, because they rid the body of bacteria (which can also mean “good bacteria”) the body may be more vulnerable to other sorts of infections or even a recurrent UTI. This is why it is so important to establish a regime that helps to rebuild a supply of good bacteria immediately after antibiotic therapy. More specifically, Dr. Hsieh recommends the probiotics, Culturelle, Align, and Saccharomyces Boulardii.

The issue of hydration is then clarified as follows: though it is common belief that to drink too much water puts you at risk of mineral depletion, it in fact takes an extraordinary amount of water to make this happen (i.e., five to six litres a day). But to sip up to three litres a day has been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing UTIs. Moreover, good hydration assists in regularity, which is an essential component to UTI prevention and management, as well—most particularly in children.

Since constipation and distaste for taking pee breaks is enormously common among children and promotes UTIs quite vigorously, it is very important to institute good hydration, plenty of fruits and veggies, less refined grains, and timed bathroom trips whether or not the child wants to go pee.

Further discussion includes causes and treatments for bladder lesions and care of elderly folks suffering from UTIs.
