Heinrich Scheidemann (1595 - 1663) was a prolific composer of the North German School. He served as organist of the Katharinenkirche in Hamburg, and was a student of the Amsterdam organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Scheidemann's output consists almost exclusively of organ music. According to Johann Mattheson, Scheidemann was a personable and jovial character, "nimble with the hand and full of humor."

Scheidemann valued simplicity in the construction of his music. His works are easily playable and enjoyable to listen to, but are expertly designed nonetheless. This is in stark contrast to his colleague, Jacob Praetorius, who was purportedly a stern, serious, and introspective individual. Praetorius' works frequently feature six-voice counterpoint and awkward, large chords which he was able to play due to innovative refinements in his technique. The dichotomy between Scheidemann and Praetorius is a popular topic, and while some say that the two organists studied with Sweelinck in Amsterdam around the same time, this is perhaps unlikely due to their difference in age, with Praetorius being nine years Scheidemann's senior.
