What is probation period?
Probation period is a period of engaging an employee to test his/her performance on the suitability of a position. If an employee’s performance is found to be unsatisfactory, the employer can terminate the employee’s services and the same cannot be construed illegal.
Why should I worry about it?
There is the concept of probation period in all govt. organizations (except defence) and most private organizations.
How long is the period of probation?
For direct recruitment: In central and state govt. services it varies from 1 year to 2 years as per the department’s training structure and requirements. Appointment in govt service on contractual basis do not have probation period.
And for promotion cases as:
1. Promotion from one grade to another but same group (e.g. group C to group C): NO probation.
2. When there is change of group: as per direct recuitment.
How probation period is different from the other service period?
1. No Annual Performance Appraisal Reports (APAR) are made by the department heads during probation period. Instead a different form is filled for them to assess their performance.
2. There are certain limitations in terms of perks and benefits to the candiate during probation. Though normal salary and allowances are provided.
3. Government can relieve the employee from the service without assigning any reason during Probation period.
4. In case the employee wishes to resign the notice period is generally 1 month during probation as against 3 months after that.
5. leave: as per normal employee of the dept.
6. In all cases of direct recruitment there is a mandatory induction training of at least two weeks duration. Successful completion of the training is a pre-requisite for completion of probation. The syllabus for the training is prescribed by the Cadre authorities.
7. Appointing Authority may extend the probation period, if they deem fit, but the total period of probation should not exceed double the normal period.
Confirmation in the service is made by issuing a formal letter by the dept. once the probation period is over.
