Language choice in multilingual communities

Описание к видео Language choice in multilingual communities

This video serves as a pre-class self-study material for students to get familiarized with the sociolinguistic topic “language choice in multilingual communities”. The target students of the video are Form 5 students enrolled in EMI schools in Hongkong. In this video, we have introduced four key concepts: linguistic repertoire, domains of language use, diglossia, and code switching. Different kinds of multimodal resources are used to enrich the content and help students understand the concepts easily: videos (including ads, interviews and TV programs), pictures, flashes and maps. The video is created and filmed in the HK context:interview of local HKU student and Pilipino helper, the 33th Hongkong Film awards and Hongkong KFC advertisement. To equip HK students with better knowledge about neighboring areas and prepare them for greater chances there, examples of Shanghai and Singapore are also introduced. Throughout the video, some interactive tasks are also provided to engage the viewers, and they are required to submit their answers to teachers' emails before class.
Group members: Angela, Echo, Elise, Forest, Joanne and Lumos.
