USA: First NRA convention since Sandy Hook Massacre

The National Rifle Association (NRA) held their first two day convention in Houston on May 3 since the Sandy Hook school massacre last December.

Inside the George R. Brown Convention Centre there are over 500 firearms, shooting and hunting accessories on display. Visitors can spend their time trying and viewing products from every major firearm company in the U.S. including knives, wildlife art, shooting accessories, hunting gear and more.

Over the two days there will also be pro-gun guest speakers including executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, Chris Cox, and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

The gun control debate has spread throughout the U.S after 20 first graders and six adults were killed by a man shooting a semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle at staff and students of Sandy Hook Elementary School. In response the U.S. Senate agreed on April 11 to start debating about gun safety measures.

David and Francine Wheeler were the parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the Connecticut school shootings. On April 13 during Obama's weekly address the Wheeler's made a personal plea from the White House for action to combat gun violence.

Three months after Sandy Hook there was a recorded 2,244 deaths by gunshot and accidental deaths in the U.S, with a total of sixteen mass shootings recorded in 2012 alone. The country also has the highest rate of gun ownership with 89 guns per 100 residents.

The NRA was founded in 1871 and is the leading advocate for the ownership of firearms. Following recent debates over gun control the NRA, their members and supporters of the second amendment have publicly protested for their right to bear arms. The NRA recently triumphed when last month a proposal put forward by U.S. President Barack Obama to expand background checks for gun buyers was repelled by Congress.
