Cancer Hair Care Nursing Advisor - Amanda Shewbridge, a senior NHS nurse of 35 years talks about her passion in her role and the important work of the charity.

This video features the Cancer Hair Care Nursing Advisor - Amanda Shewbridge. Amanda, a senior cancer nurse of 35 years, who recently won the Macmillan LifeTime Achievement Award shares her vision for the important work of the charity. In particular her excitement that hairdressers from around the UK are being trained to extend our support network. As well as her kind words to fellow nurses to sign post patients to the experts - Cancer Hair Care.

In 2018 Mandy was herself diagnosed with cancer and experienced hair loss. Having been coached by Jasmin Julia Gupta and supported by Cancer Hair Care throughout her journey she became the Cancer Hair Care Nursing Advisor in 2020.

Amanda says “I hope that every patient can access support through Cancer Hair Care and aim to help the charity grow to enable this very essential support that every patient deserves”.

With a career spanning more than 35 years, Amanda has worked tirelessly to influence, challenge and improve outcomes and experiences for people living with cancer.

Amanda qualified as a nurse in 1984, she has gone on to have an impressive career in oncology, cancer nursing and research. From her early roles at Guy’s Hospital, Amanda’s drive to improve the quality of life of people with cancer and make sure people receive equal care has been outstanding.

In 2005, Amanda became Lead Nurse for Cancer Services at Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust, and later the Consultant Nurse in breast cancer at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. While there, she put into effect nurse-led diagnostic services and end-of-treatment clinics.

In 2017, she became the Macmillan Nurse Programme Lead for Living with and Beyond Cancer at South East London Accountable Cancer Network, where she transformed patient care by championing the Recovery Package that features four main interventions for patient support and care.

In 2018 Amanda was diagnosed with early ovarian cancer. Cancer Hair Care supported her throughout her treatment and beyond.
