Blows below ground: tunnelling operations on the Western Front

In this presentation, Lt-Col Alexander Turner looks at tunnelling in the Great War, and in particular the context in which these operations were carried out. The tunnelling that took place was not undertaken for its own sake, but almost always as part of a wider operation. These, by necessity, were long term tasks which utilised vast amounts of manpower and other resources. Did the results of these operations make this work really worthwhile?
