Instructions:
All of the entries in this cryptic are modeled
after the totemic items in Richard Wagner’s
great operatic tetralogy The Ring of the
Nibelung. Like Wotan’s spear, which derives
its power from the inscriptions on it, 11 of
the clue answers must be inscribed with an
extra letter before being entered in the
grid; another 11 are modeled after the
Tarnhelm, which can make any character
invisible; like the sword Nothung, 11 entries
must be broken apart and reassembled;
and the 11 entries that possess the ring
itself use it to exert power over crossing
entries, trapping them with its forceful
influence. This last group of entries, when
the puzzle is complete, will identify the true
master of the ring.
