Yet another case of a "simple job" going a bit out of control and turning in to a protracted repair and sorting out the hurdles as they come to hand.

iPhone 4 battery connector needs replacing because it has been pulled off (fairly common unfortunately). To make matters worse the NTC and SWI/gas-gauge pads also came off which required some digging around to reconnect.
