Wine Review: Riunite Lambrusco Emilia IGT

In todays tasting Wine=Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen MW, tastes a branded wine that has had huge significance. For a period of over quarter of a century, this wine, Riunite's Lambrusco Emilia , was the highest selling imported wine in the United States of America.

Cantine Riunite was established in Reggio Emilia 1950. The co=operative grew and began exporting in the 1960's. In 1969 they made their first shipment to the USA. Working alongside premium Tuscan producer Villa Banfi, who managed their distribution, by 1976 they had grown to become the biggest supplier of imported wines in the USA - a position they maintained for more than quarter of a century.

Today the co-operative comprises 27 wineries, has 1700 members supplying it with fruit, controls 4800 hectares of vineyards, produces about 140 million bottles of wine a year (in 2021-22) and exports to 80 countries.
