A new analysis by the Center for Countering Digital Hate reveals that misleading claims about the U.S. election posted by Elon Musk on X (formerly Twitter) have garnered nearly 1.2 billion views. The center identified 50 instances this year where Musk's posts, debunked by independent fact-checkers, spread unchecked on the platform. Shockingly, none of these posts had a “Community Note” to correct or add context, raising doubts about the effectiveness of X’s fact-checking system.

Musk, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, has the largest following on X, with 193 million followers. His influence on the 2024 election is significant, making this the first presidential contest since he bought the app.

Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, criticized Musk for amplifying and spreading disinformation, likening it to a "colosseum-style spectacle." The report also highlights Musk's recent spread of a false news article about the U.K., which reached 1.8 million views before he deleted it.

X is under scrutiny for other election-related issues. Recently, five secretaries of state reported false election information on X, and a New York congressman called for an investigation into whether X improperly blocked users from following an official account for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Despite numerous fact-checks debunking Musk's claims, he continues to spread misleading information, particularly about voter registration and immigration. The Center's report underscores the massive reach of these falsehoods, with some posts receiving over 40 million views.
