James Kraig Kahler and Karen Kahler met in college in the 1980s, married, and had three children, Emily, Lauren, and Sean. They lived a comfortable life, with Kraig working a high-paying job while Karen stayed home to care for the children. However, Kraig became increasingly controlling, leading Karen to feel trapped. She eventually found solace in a friendship with a woman named Sunny, which developed into a romantic relationship.

When Karen confessed this to Kraig, he initially reacted calmly but later tried to involve himself in the relationship. Karen ultimately left Kraig for Sunny, and the couple began divorce proceedings. Kraig’s life spiraled out of control—he lost his job, became obsessive, and stalked Karen. On November 29, 2009, Kraig entered his 89-year-old grandmother's house, where Karen and their children were staying, and fatally shot Karen, their daughters Emily and Lauren, and Karen's grandmother. Sean, the only survivor, witnessed the killings and escaped.

Kraig was arrested, confessed, and tried for murder. His defense argued insanity, but the prosecution demonstrated premeditation. In 2011, Kraig was found guilty and sentenced to death. Despite multiple appeals, he remains on death row. Sean, the sole survivor, grew up under the care of his grandmother and now lives and works in his hometown.
