Let's get this fire going.

MATERIALS
Tinder: Any material that lights easily and burns quickly. Some examples are dry grass, newspaper, toilet paper rolls and twine.
Kindling: Thin pieces of dry wood that will help build your fire. Softwoods like cedar are a great choice for kindling.
Fuel Wood: Larger and more dense pieces of wood that will keep your fire going. Hardwoods like oak, maple and elm will keep your fire burning for a longer time.
Fire Pit: Clear a small area so that it is just dirt. You can add some rocks around it for maintenance and protection.

LAYOUTS
Teepee: With this layout, you'll get things heated quickly. Arrange the wood in a cone shape with your flame in the center.

Log Cabin : Lay your wood in square frames and stack them on top of each other. Your flame will burn in the open center. This layout burns with a steady heat and is great for cooking.

Upsidedown: Stack layers on top of each other with no spaces in the middle. Make the layers smaller as you build up. Lay your tinder on top of the stack so you can have the flame at the top. The fire will burn down slowly to prove a long heat.

Lean-To: If there is too much wind, a Lean-To fire will help you keep your flame alive. Place one log horizontally on the ground, then and arrange smaller pieces of wood against it at an angle. This creates a shelter for the fire to burn.

Star: The star method involves arranging wood in a star-like pattern. leaving a gap at the center for air circulation. It's effective for creating a long-lasting fire and can be useful for cooking.
