Mark Kerrigan ... the brother of famed Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan ... is pleading not guilty.

He''s charged with assaulting his father at their home in this Boston suburb.

Daniel Kerrigan died over the weekend ...
Prosecutors say he had been arguing with his son.

Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from the home ... and Daniel was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police say they discovered Mark on a couch in the basement ...
They say he appeared intoxicated and was "belligerent and combative".
Officers used pepper spray to subdue him and eventually arrested him.
Mark''s defense lawyer says her client denies any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors say Mark has a long criminal record ... including previous arrests for battery and assault with a dangerous weapon.
But outside the courtroom... A man who says he''s a friend of the family described Mark as a loving person ... and said the family is grieving.

It was at this time ... 16 years ago ... That Nancy Kerrigan would go on to win the silver medal at the Lillehammer Olympics.

Just a month before she was hit in the knee in a plot partly-created by rival Tonya Harding.
Harding pleaded guilty to her role, spending time on probation, doing community service, and paying a fine.
