In the meantime, we are warming up with these short daily practices. Every day, we focus on one essential element of your gait pattern.

Today, while walking, pay attention to the foot angle. The average angle is around 5-7 degrees of turnout (angle between the foot and the straight line of ambulation.) It is not a good idea to willfully correct the foot's position without understanding the hip's angle. In fact, such correction may cause hip strain and pain. Femoral neck anteversion will most often cause in-toeing because the person's hip is positioned centrally in the socket only while turning the foot inward. Retroversion would do the opposite - something often called "duck-walking" or walking like Charlie Chaplin. So, in such conditions, pigeon-toeing or out-toeing might be the most intelligent way of using the skeleton, not a pathology that has to be corrected by forcing yourself to walk "straight."

Today's practice includes observing your right foot's spontaneous, habitual angle and then the left. Then experiment by walking with your right foot turned in slightly, then out, and try to find what angle makes the best sensation of power, stability, and comfort in your hip. Repeat with your left foot. Please spend a few minutes experiencing each variation fully. Most importantly, make the practice safe and gentle to limit any risk of falling or strain on your joints..
