It's was spooky o'clock in my city, and seemed like a good time to play "Big Long Now", an eerie tune, one of my favourites.

"Big Long Now" was written in the autumn of 1988 and is credited to both Kurt and Krist, which is a rare case. The earliest known recording is from rehearsals in Krist's house in Aberdeen, December of 1988. The whole session was mostly filmed by Krist's brother Robert. Robert recalls, "We got some beer, watched my brother, and partied. We didn't really think anything of it at the time because they were not that popular then. I do remember some kids walking by that night, stopping and standing there listening with an amazed look on their faces, like it was music they had never heard before; they really didn't know what to make of it, other than it was good. That was the night I thought there maybe something really special happening with the band".

That rehearsal performance was released on the "With The Lights Out" DVD. "Big Long Now" from this session is the only known live performance of the song. Chad and Jason Everman claim the band did perform it live, but no recordings have surfaced.

Later that December, Nirvana started to record "Bleach" with Jack Endino at Reciprocal Studio. "Big Long Now" was recorded, but rejected from the album at the last minute because Kurt decided there were enough slow, heavy tunes on the record. It’s the only original outtake from the "Bleach" sessions. The song was forgotten and abandoned until Endino championed for it's inclusion on "Incesticide". This the only studio version of "Big Long Now", and that's the one I use in the video.
