"In Juliaca, a day like today (January 9, 2023) 18 brothers were murdered in a single day. STORYLINE:
Relatives of 18 demonstrators who were killed by police one year ago during protests, marched on Tuesday to mark a year of political instability in Peru and demand justice for their deceased relatives.

Anti-government protests that demanded an end to the government of President Dina Boluarte left 67 people dead and 1,956 injured between December 2022 and January 2023.

According to Peru's Ombudsman's Office, almost all of the dead were civilians, and most of them were killed by firearms.

One of the most violent of the protests took place in the Indigenous province of Juliaca, where 18 people were killed in one day.

The violence to which the police resorted to prevent the demonstrations led to further nationwide protests.

This episode of instability started when president Pedro Castillo tried to dissolve Congress amid corruption accusations.

When the Congress ousted him, Boluarte stepped into the presidency.
