STORYLINE
Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir fired rubber bullets on Friday to disperse hundreds of Muslim protesters who had gathered to show their support for the Palestinian people and to mark Al-Quds Day, or Jerusalem Day, which marks Muslims' claim on the holy city.
Al Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.
In a number of areas across Srinagar, protesters clashed with police and paramilitary soldiers, throwing stones at them as they tried to march after Friday prayers.
Protesters chanted anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans and set a symbolic Israeli flag on fire.
"In every part of the world it is our first obligation to come out on the streets on this day and to protest to free Al-Aqsa Mosque from Israeli occupation," said one protester, Mushtaq Ahmad.
Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem, where the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of the holiest Islamic sites, is situated.
