John Kehoe’s pub in Anne Street South in Dublin, just off Grafton Street, in fact, is a very special place.

Immediately on entry you can see what was the grocery part of the pub, with its mahogany drawers which would once have been full of tea, coffee or snuff.

You could say it’s a bit of a time capsule, since it’s interior hasn’t significantly changed since its origin in Victorian times at the end of the 19th Century. In fact the pub was fist licensed in 1803

We look at one of the little snugs, many of Dublin’s oldest pubs have had these amazing cozy little areas long since dispensed with. But they’re retained here I all their Victorian beauty.

I say Victorian beauty, but it’s not a massively ornate pub, like say, the Crown in Belfast. But it’s very authentic.

And as I wander down into the back bar, which just happens to be empty at the minute, it’s still quite early in the day, this place will be thronged at night time, we can see here that apart from the Christmas window dressing, it’s a fairly austere and unpretentious interior. There’s a little photo on the wall showing the place in the old days, with the horse drawn brewery cart outside.

I know there’ll be no one upstairs at this time of day, but we might as well have a look around.

Typical old carpet reminds me of my house when I was a kid. And then we have this wall of pictures of famous Irish writers and personalities of one sort or another.

Again, this yellow and red two-tone decor runs throughout the pub. This part of the pub feels like it has quite a low ceiling – almost as though we’re in someone’s house!

There’s another whole section that we don’t have access to at this time of day. But you can imagine how busy this place would be at night. Or on a summer’s night as you can see in this old photo.
