ALA Goes Live on FOX Weather to Tackle Lifeguard Shortage and Promote Water Safety

As the United States marked the official start of summer on June 20, 2025, the American Lifeguard Association (ALA) appeared live on FOX Weather to deliver a timely message about water safety and the urgent need for more lifeguards. Representing the ALA, National Spokesperson Wyatt Werneth shared key insights into what must be done to protect swimmers during the nation’s busiest aquatic season.

The interview was strategically timed to coincide with the summer solstice—the longest day of the year and the unofficial start of peak swimming season. ALA’s message was clear and compelling: lifeguards save lives, and we need more of them now.

Werneth explained that the national lifeguard shortage, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to strain public and private aquatic facilities across the country. “Many pools, beaches, and waterparks either can’t open or have to reduce hours,” Werneth noted. “This isn’t just inconvenient—it’s a serious public safety issue.”

To help meet demand, the ALA has rolled out flexible, blended certification programs that allow candidates to complete the academic portion online and demonstrate physical skills in person. This streamlined model lowers barriers to entry and accelerates the path into the workforce. Werneth also emphasized the importance of financial accessibility, encouraging municipalities and employers to reimburse training costs to attract more candidates.

Crucially, Werneth pointed out that solving the shortage will require a broader vision of who can serve as a lifeguard. “The lifeguard force of the future isn’t just made up of teenagers,” he said. “It includes retirees, veterans, and working adults. We need an inclusive, community-driven solution to ensure safety at every aquatic facility.”

FOX Weather’s segment provided a national platform to reinforce ALA’s mission and raise awareness. With more than 25,000 active members nationwide, the American Lifeguard Association partners with employers to meet standards set forth by the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) and recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The segment concluded with a powerful call to action for parents, community leaders, and facility operators: “Become a lifeguard, support lifeguards, or simply help share the message,” Werneth urged. “Together, we can keep our pools and beaches safe this summer.”

The ALA continues its work across all 50 states, collaborating with cities, schools, and organizations to provide nationally recognized training and improve aquatic safety outcomes.
