Rx Ballroom Dance Student Spotlight: Kara Diaz

Kara is a lover of all things dance.  She has been a dancer for most of her life, over 30 years.  But when Kara was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson's Disease she knew something was wrong.  Her right side completely froze up. She couldn't flow or move without needing to pause or forcing her right side to listen. And now with a disability, how was she supposed to afford dance and dance lessons?

 But life doesn't end with a diagnosis and Kara's spirit pursued the ability to dance and perform as she always had.  

When Rx Ballroom Dance opened at Champion in March of 2023, the location near her home  and a teacher who specialized in theater arts now meant Kara had the opportunity to join an incredible community of dancers all using the power of dance to improve their physical, cognitive and emotional lives. The Rx Ballroom Dance program focuses on posture, balance, coordination, memory and social/emotional growth- all things Kara needed and wanted out of a program.  But most importantly, ballroom dance gave Kara the joy and confidence that she already had for dancing, and a safe place to enjoy it and have the opportunity to perform again.

Kara started the scholarship program and was so excited to perform in front of an audience. She left audiences speechless as she showcased her ability to master modern and theatrical dancing, flying through the air with ease and grace.  She gained confidence and served as an inspiration.  Life, especially pushing your boundaries, doesn't stop with Parkinson's.

The Rx Ballroom Dance program gave Kara a tool for continued physical and neurological improvement.  With more people being diagnosed with disabilities every day, there are so many “Kara's” out there who feel isolated and wonder if they will ever be able to do what they love again.
