Phosphorus cycle
The phosphorus cycle is a process by which natural phosphorus rotates from the environment to the organism and from the organism to the environment.
Importance of phosphorus cycle
Phosphorus is an essential component of the protoplasm of all organisms.
It is the structural unit of ADP or ATP and nucleic acids (DNA or RNA).
Phospholipids made of phosphorus are the building blocks of the bone, cell membrane, and hereditary materials such as RNA and DNA.
Phosphorus cycle consists of 4 stages
1. Weathering
2. Absorption by plants
3. Absorption by animals
4. Decomposition
1. Weathering
Release of phosphorus in the form of dissolved phosphate from rocks into the soil
2. Absorption by plants
Use and assimilation of dissolved phosphate in the soil by terrestrial and aquatic plants.
3. Absorption by animals
These plants are then eaten by animals and thus the phosphorus gets absorbed in the body of the animals.
4. Decomposition
Return of phosphate from the organism to the environment by decomposition and by Excretion.
