Reproduction in bacteria!

While bacteria primarily reproduce asexually by binary fission, some species exhibit mechanisms of genetic exchange that resemble sexual reproduction.

Types of Genetic Exchange in Bacteria

1. *Transformation*: Direct uptake of free DNA molecules from the environment.
2. *Transduction*: Transfer of DNA from one bacterium to another through a viral vector.
3. *Conjugation*: Direct transfer of DNA from one bacterium to another through a specialized structure.

Conjugation

Conjugation is the most complex and coordinated form of genetic exchange in bacteria.

1. *Donor cell*: Prepares for conjugation by producing a sex pilus.
2. *Recipient cell*: Recognizes the donor cell and establishes contact.
3. *DNA transfer*: A plasmid or chromosomal DNA is transferred from the donor to the recipients.
