Jesse and Justin Starkey were wading in chest-deep water moments before they stepped into a drop-off and drowned The 15-year-old identical twins drowned last month after swimming
at a murky retention pond near the Interstate 255 overpass near
Bethalto.
Friends said the boys were not good swimmers. A friend who had
been swimming with the boys got close enough to touch them but
panicked when one them grabbed him and started to pull him under, The pond was created two years ago from dirt used in the Interstate 255 construction. It is between Cottage Hills and Bethalto
and was to be used as part of a golf course. "That is no longer going swimmers can wade in five feet of water out to
about 20 feet after which it drops off to a depth of 20-25 feet.
