To look and function its best, your chandelier needs to be the proper width and height. Here’s how to figure out both:

To figure out your chandelier width, measure the length of the room.

Next, measure the width. The length of the room plus the width equals the most appropriate chandelier width in inches.

For a small room, consider a chandelier size that is 13 to 22 inches wide:

If you have a medium size room, select a chandelier that is 23 to 30 inches wide:

And, if you have a large room, look for a chandelier that is 31 inches wide or larger:

The hanging height of your chandelier depends on the hanging location. If you’re hanging it above a dining room table, the bottom should be 32 to 34 inches above the tabletop:

For chandeliers hung over the open floor, the bottom should be at least seven feet above the floor.

Over a kitchen island, a height of 32 to 34 inches over the counter is recommended. The goal is to hang it close enough so that it provides enough light, but not too close so that it gets in the way.

In an open foyer, hang the chandelier at eye level or slightly below when viewed from the second floor. Since it will be viewed from above, it’s a good idea to pick a chandelier that’s attractive from all angles.

Our chandeliers usually come with ten-feet of wire and six-feet of chain. These lengths work for most homes and can be customized to your ceiling height. Other chandeliers come with different downrod sizes which can be combined to achieve your ideal hanging height.

Most chandeliers can be installed nearly anywhere indoors. But we have a few tips depending on your ceiling type. For low ceilings simply remove most of the chain or use the shortest downrod to install your chandelier. With sloped or vaulted ceilings, gravity will ensure that chandeliers with a chain or a cord will hang straight. Those with a downrod will need a special ceiling mount adapter. If you have extra high ceilings, purchase additional chain or downrods to accommodate your ceiling height.

Most chandeliers can be used with a dimmer. If you’re buying an LED chandelier, look for compatible dimmers and bulbs A dimmer lets you easily change the light level from bright to soft.
