Nioh is a dark fantasy action-RPG set in the year 1600 during the late Sengoku period of Japan. You play as William Adams, an Irish sailor who travels to the East in pursuit of the alchemist Edward Kelley. Kelley has stolen William's Guardian Spirit, a mermaid-like being named Saoirse, to help him harvest magical amrita stones. Upon arriving on the shores of Japan, William is thrust into a brutal civil war between the Tokugawa and Ishida clans.

He eventually forms an alliance with the legendary ninja Hattori Hanzo and the powerful warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu. As he battles through war-torn provinces, he must confront both human soldiers and terrifying supernatural demons known as Yokai. The story expertly blends real Japanese history with folklore, featuring dozens of actual historical figures. Every mission brings you closer to reclaiming your spirit while uncovering a deeper plot to plunge the world into eternal darkness.

The gameplay is famously challenging, often drawing comparisons to the "Soulslike" genre due to its high difficulty and punishing combat. Combat is built around a deep stance system consisting of Low, Mid, and High positions, each offering different defensive and offensive properties. A crucial mechanic is the Ki Pulse, which allows you to recover stamina instantly if you time your button presses correctly after an attack.

You also have access to powerful Living Weapons, which are summoned Guardian Spirits that grant temporary invulnerability and massive damage. Loot is a major component of the game, as enemies constantly drop gear with various rarities and randomized stat bonuses. This creates a deeply customizable experience where you can build your character into a fast ninja or a heavy-armored samurai.

Outside of direct combat, you can utilize Ninjutsu and Onmyo Magic to gain tactical advantages over the most difficult bosses. Mastery of these systems is the only way to survive the grueling trials found in the depths of Japan's cursed landscapes.
