Long-tailed shrike - Lanius schach - calm morning preening - Cebu Philippines

Here at the back of our home I found this Long-tailed shrike one early morning. It did not sing unfortunately, but did its morning preening.

After the Super Typhoon Rai (known as “Odette” in the Philippines) wrecked havoc with most of our fruit trees there is more birds here now than before the Typhoon hit in 2021.

The Long-tailed shrike used to visit once in a while prior to 2021, but now it is a daily guest.

This bird is also called rufous-backed shrike, Mamomonggot (Visayan)

The name "shrike" is from Old English scríc, "shriek", referring to the shrill call of this bird.

Length 240 mm

This common bird is breeding from March to June in the Philippines and lay from 3 to 4 eggs.

It is great to finally be able to return to our home in Cebu after the pandemic hit, and over the next months I will show you more from our home in Aloguinsan, Cebu.
