I had some interesting memories of this game when I first got into the emulation scene. I remembered it being a fairly average RPG, with nothing really popping out as excellent in any way. It reeked of mediocrity, yet I still enjoyed playing it, but I feel this may have been mostly because I was really getting heavily into RPGs at the time, and wanted to play every one I could find.

Yet the more I played of this game, the more I just lost interest in it. So as a young adult, I never completed it, but recently I played it start to finish to review it. And...my opinions haven’t changed much. I suggest you check out my review for my actual thoughts, but in a nutshell, this is an RPG that just kind of exists.

In any case, this video focuses on the final battle with the big bad Homncruse. (Am I the only one who feels like this villain’s name sounds more like a battle carrier than a evil guy?) The fight takes place in a very ho-hum dungeon that looks like the other dozens of caves you previously encountered. You need to fight Homncruse in three forms. You cannot win the first, and are kicked out of the battle after defeat. You run to the starting dungeon to find the most powerful sword in the game, along with a Light Orb, which allows you to cut through Homncruse’s illusion. You then fight the other two forms with some of the most boring final boss music ever. It doesn’t help that for the most part, you’ll be using the same commands over and over just to keep yourself alive, due to Homncruse using high level magic that can wipe your team in two turns if you’re not careful. Hope you kept all those mirrors and moon drops!

The ending itself is just as blah as the rest of the game. There’s not even a formal game over text that you normally get; the UFO that you are in just flies away into an eternally scrolling starfield. I was waiting for about 5 minutes to see if there were any scenes, to the point that the ending music just stopped. And still nothing, and I turned the game off.

I’m glad I took the time to play Secret of the Stars, but this is one secret I won’t be hunting for again.
