You need capital. The Dutch didn't build a global empire through military genius. They built it through financial innovation - the joint-stock company, war bonds, and the first central bank in history. They are essentially a securitized empire.
By the 19th century, the economy didn't fund armies anymore. The economy was the army. Britain's industrial machine produced the uniforms, the rifles, the ships, and the discipline. Napoleon's campaigns collapsed not because of Russian winter alone — but because France ran out of credit. War had become a function of sovereign debt.
And the 20th century? It turned the whole equation inside out. Nations didn't go to war to enrich themselves. They impoverished themselves to survive wars that industrial rivalry had made inevitable. The balance sheets of 1918 were more devastating than the battlefields.
The pattern is always the same. The economy defines what kind of war is possible. And war, in return, reshapes the economy that survives it.
