Show Me Elegance! Antique & Vintage Shopping Scarcities

A great gathering place for great antique and vintage discoveries is Cape Girardeau, Missouri! Antiques are helping revive this 19th century riverport downtown, with a collection of antique malls and vintage shops spread over several blocks of Victorian brick storefronts. Resellers here contribute to Antiques Roadshow and national glass shows, so there's some high-powered stuff for us to see today!

Our first stop-and-shop is Back Porch Antiques, a decades-long established collective of everything from MCM lighting and vintage children's books to one dealer whose elegant glass choices are unusual enough to have filled the pages of the renowned Mauzy's price guides. Craftwork comes to life in the form of colorful 90-year-old brocade etched vases and vessels, a bowl as old as the Everglades national park and a real Odd Ball set of Morgantown drinkware that modernists prize and is seldom found anymore!

We take a tour that leads to vibrantly elegant Juliana jewelry, a fun basket purse with a local story and a piece that explains why Aunt Clara collected doorknobs, then preview a brand new antique mall that's forming right in front of us as we head towards Spanish Street Emporium...and what a fun place this turns out to be!

A Willys Americar fills the lobby of the ice cream parlor as we enter another multi-story mall, where elegantly designed spaces make you feel like you've entered a banquet hall, a walk-in closet of vintage clothing or an attractive kitchen pantry filled with vintage ironstone, brass accents and tableware! But we find our fun (and a bargain-priced Alaska carved totem) in cases and spaces specializing in everything from vintage denim and jadeite to farm junk, bakelite utensils and a fun bowling ball decanter set at a bargain price.

Our walk through time has to end before we can hit all the town's elegant offerings...there's so much in this antique town known as 'The Cape' that we'll have to make a trip back for more shopping soon!
