Suwa Taisha (grand shrine) is the most important provincial shrine in Nagano, with a long history as an Ichinomiya. There are two sites, Kamisha and Shimosha, situated on opposite sides of Lake Suwa. At each site, there are two shrines. In Kamisha, you will find Maemiya and Honmiya. In Shimosha, there are Harumiya and Akimiya. Harumiya means "spring shrine". The deity stays at Harumiya from the first of February to the first of August and resides at Akimiya during the rest of the year.
Speaking of Suwa Taisha, the Onbashira festival is well known. The festival is held every six years, in the years of the Monkey and the Tiger in the Chinese zodiac. You will notice four large logs standing in every corner of the precincts. These four logs called Onbashira were felled in the Kirigamine forest, which is 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) away from the shrine. People manually towed the logs without power machinery and stood them on their own.

Manji no Sekibutsu was made in 1660. According to tradition, when a stonemason chiseled a large stone to make Torii gate for Harumiya, blood suddenly started flowing out from the stone. The stonemason, believing it to be a curse from the deity, decided to carve a Buddha. The unique and primitive figure of the buddha attracts people's interest.
