Of the 4 fundamental components for a road test, speed management is essential. Still, it is more important to maintain a buffer of space around your vehicle than it is to maintain a constant speed. At the same time, you do not want your speed changes to be aggressive.

The throttle, gas pedal, or accelerator is the pedal on the right that controls how fast the engine works. The harder you push on the throttle, the faster the engine revs. The engines revolutions per minute (rpms) are measured by a tachometer. Most vehicles in this-day-and-age are equipped with a tachometer.

The first exercise that you can do is work the throttle to bring the engine rpms up to 1,500 rpms, for example, and hold the tachometer at that level. The other exercise is to simply "punch" the throttle, or rev the motor as it's some times called. The purpose of the exercise is to feel the physical response of the throttle.

Pick different numbers on the tachometer and bring the needle up to that number and then hold it there. In a gas or petrol engine it is not recommended to rev the motor much above 2,000 rpm. In a diesel engine, do not rev the engine much above 1,200rpm.

The next exercise is to put the vehicle into a low forward gear and throttle hard forward and in reverse. And as I say in the video, do this exercise in an empty parking lot where there aren't any other vehicles are road users about.

The last exercise is to go out on a roadway where you have a long straight stretch. On that long straight stretch of roadway, just work to maintain a constant speed. And on technique that will help with maintaining a constant speed is to implement a scanning pattern. The scanning pattern goes as follows:

• Forward
• Centre mirror
• Forward
• Instrument panel
• Forward
• Wing Mirrors

And repeat the scanning pattern every 8-10 seconds. Of course the scanning pattern is going to change as different traffic situations demand different scanning patterns. For example, scanning an intersection before proceeding through. However, when proceeding straight, this is going to be the most common scanning pattern and will help you to observe the instrument panel and your speed.

If you are attempting to maintain the speed with the throttle, you are always going to be adjusting while you're driving. 2-3 mph or 3-5 kph variance is going to be common for new drivers.

The more practice you get working the throttle and other primary controls of the vehicle, the more successful you are going to be maintaining a constant speed.
