Major Robert Cain (Jeremy Clarkson's ex Father In Law) won the Victoria Cross medal at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden in World War 2. His use of the PIAT anti tank gun and Mortar tube would become legendary!

Major Robert Cain Arnhem on the second day of Operation Market Garden in September 1944. His objective was to provide support to the British soldiers holding the bridge in Arnhem.

Operation Market Garden's failings are well documented and Robert Cain and his men were outnumbered and out gunned forcing them to withdraw to the town of Oosterbeek.

Oosterbeek was of great military importance as it was the base of the Allies artillery support. Cain was ordered to hold the town at all costs.

With just a handful of soldiers and under constant attack from German SS soldiers, Panzer and Tiger tanks and Flame throwers Cain heroically holds the town re-writing the rules for the PIAT anti tank gun in the process!

The story of Major Robert Cain and his defence of Oosterbeek is simply awe inspiring. Cains bravery during the battle was formidable whilst his leadership was nothing short of astonishing.

Robert Cain became the only surviving soldier of the Battle Of Arnhem to be awarded the Victoria Cross and his story would go on to become one of the most inspirational of Operation Market Garden, if not the entire War.
