Do you belong to a group that is not incorporated? If so each member of the group may be liable for anything that the group does. It is not possible to separate "ownership" and "accountability" in a partnership. However in a corporation the shareholders are the owners and the directors are the ones who are accountable. In a group that is not incorporated there is no such division. Do you know what joint and several liability means? It means that if there are 10 people in the group and the group owes $20,000 that you may not each pay $2,000. That is proportional liability. With joint and several if any member of the group does not have the $2,000 then the others in the group will have to pay more. This is joint and several. So if you are involved with a group that is not incorporated understand that you might be responsible for 100% of their debts or other problems if it turns out that you are the only one with any money.
