A Decade of the European Banking Union: Achievements, Challenges, and the Way Forward

Recorded at the Hertie School, 02.10.2024

A decade ago, the Banking Union was launched with high hopes of creating a more unified and resilient financial system across the EU. While progress has been made and new financial crises have been avoided, the vision of a fully integrated banking market remains unfulfilled.

As reactions to UniCredit’s bid for Commerzbank show, cross-border consolidation is still contested and a complete banking union far from reality. We want to discuss why trust in building a truly European banking framework is wavering and what is needed to for further financial integration.

Join us for a discussion with Nicolas Verón, Senior Fellow at Bruegel and the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and Karolin Schriever, Executive Board Member of the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV). Together, they will reflect on the past achievements and discuss future visions for the European Banking Union. The discussion will be moderated by Johannes Lindner, Co-Director of the Jacques Delors Centre.
